The PS5 jailbreak scene has taken a major step forward with the public release of Relapse, bringing a public exploit route to PS5 firmware as high as 13.60.
Until recently, firmware 13.60 was an important target for PS5 security researchers, but the public pieces required for newer 13.xx systems had not fully come together. Relapse changes that.
What is Relapse?
Relapse is a newly released PS5 exploit chain targeting firmware versions from 7.00 through 13.60.
For PS5 owners who deliberately stayed on firmware 13.60 or lower while waiting for further security research, this is a significant development.
Which firmware versions are supported?
Current information indicates that Relapse targets PS5 firmware from 7.00 through 13.60.
Firmware 13.60 has therefore crossed an important threshold in public PS5 security research.
However, there is one major limitation:
PS5 firmware 14.00 is not currently supported by Relapse.
Claims that Relapse provides a working jailbreak for 14.00 should therefore be treated with caution unless new research changes the situation.
It is not a permanent jailbreak
Relapse is not persistent.
After completely restarting the PS5, the exploit needs to be run again. Exploitation may also fail or result in crashes or kernel panics.
This means users should not confuse the current release with a mature permanent jailbreak.
Instead, Relapse provides an important foundation that homebrew developers can continue building on.
Homebrew development is catching up
Relapse arrives alongside progress in other PS5 homebrew projects.
ps5debug-NG 1.3.2 has added support for firmware 13.40, 13.42 and 13.60, with its developers reporting that the required offsets were checked on real hardware.
Kstuff-related development has also continued across newer PS5 firmware.
These projects matter because an exploit alone does not automatically provide everything users normally associate with a complete jailbreak.
Homebrew loaders, debugging tools, payloads and other supporting software still need to work reliably on the newly supported firmware.
What about firmware 14.00?
Firmware 14.00 remains outside Relapse's currently supported range.
Security research involving newer PS5 firmware continues, but browser vulnerabilities, offsets and proof-of-concept research should not automatically be described as complete jailbreaks.
For now, there is no equivalent public Relapse exploit for firmware 14.00.
What happens next?
The next stage will involve developers testing Relapse across supported systems, improving reliability and expanding compatibility with homebrew tools and payloads.
Firmware 14.xx will also remain an important target for researchers.
